Tips for Planning the Perfect Outfits for Your Engagement Photo Session

Engagement photo sessions are one of the most exciting parts of wedding planning! It’s the first chance to capture the love between you and your partner in a relaxed and intimate setting. However, before you step in front of the camera, there’s one important thing to think about: What to wear. Choosing the right outfit for your engagement photos will help you feel confident, comfortable, and ensure you look your best in those timeless images.

As a Cleveland wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of working with many couples in a variety of locations and have gathered a few key tips for planning outfits. Here’s how to look and feel amazing in your engagement photos:

1. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of perfectly matching outfits. Instead of wearing identical outfits (Think: JC Penney's style matching jeans and white shirts), focus on coordinating your looks. Opt for complementary colors, patterns, or textures that reflect your personalities. For example, if one of you wears a floral dress, the other can wear a solid-colored shirt that pulls a color from the pattern.

Coordinate your outfits so that they look cohesive, but still allow for individual expression will read much better than everything being too catchy. Soft neutrals like beige, ivory, and blush are always great choices, but don’t be afraid to add a pop of color or a fun pattern to make your photos more dynamic.

2. Consider the Location & Season

The backdrop of your engagement photos should influence your outfit choices. Cleveland offers a variety of beautiful locations, from urban settings with the city skyline showing Terminal Tower to natural landscapes one might find at the Cleveland Metroparks. Think about how your outfits will complement the surroundings. If you're shooting at a park or in the woods, earthy tones and soft pastels will work well with the natural elements. For an urban shoot, sharper colors like navy, burgundy, or even metallics can give a chic, sophisticated feel.

The season is also a key factor. In the fall, deep jewel tones like emerald green or maroon look stunning against the autumn foliage. During the winter months, layers up with scarves, cozy sweaters, and jackets to add texture and warmth to your photos. In the spring and summer, light, breezy, fabrics and bright colors such as coral, teal, and lemon, can make your images feel fresh and vibrant.

3. Think About Comfort

The more comfortable you feel, the more natural your photos will look. If you’re constantly adjusting parts of your outfit because you are uncomfortable in what you’re wearing, it will show in your photos. Choose clothing that fits you well and allows you to move easily, especially if you plan on doing anything active like walking or dancing during your shoot.

Don't forget comfortable clothes also includes shoes! While it is tempting to wear those high heels or stylish boots, make sure they’re comfortable enough for walking and standing for an extended period. Or at least bring an extra pair of walking shoes to change into between locations.

4. Layer Up

Layers are a great way to add depth and interest to your engagement photos. A stylish jacket, scarf, or cardigan can elevate your outfit and make it feel more polished. Layers also have the added benefit of allowing you to switch up your look without needing to fully change outfits. For example, you could wear a sweater during the first part of your shoot, then add a denim or leather jacket for a later part to give a different vibe.

5. Avoid Logos and Distracting Patterns

While patterns can be beautiful, it is important to avoid overly busy or distracting patterns. Logos, graphic tees, and excessively loud prints can pull focus away from you as a couple and detract from the overall aesthetic of your photos. Instead, opt for solid colors or more subtle prints like stripes, polka dots, or florals.

If you're unsure, stick to timeless pieces that can withstand fashion trends.

6. Accessorize Wisely

Accessories can add a personal touch to your engagement photos, but be careful not to over-do it. Simple jewelry, such as a pair of gold earrings or thin bracelet, can elevate your look without stealing the spotlight. If you're going for a more bohemian vibe, consider adding a wide-brimmed hat or a statement scarf.

Don't forget about the engagement ring itself! Be sure to have it cleaned before your session so it sparkles in every shot. It’s a great opportunity to highlight the ring in some close-up images, so make sure it’s looking its best as well.

7. Plan for Hair and Makeup

While not directly related to your outfits, your hair and makeup are crucial to your overall look in the photos. Opt for a more polished version of your everyday style, or utilize your makeup trial on the day of your session. If you're doing your own makeup, consider using a bit more foundation than usual to ensure you don’t appear washed out in photos, and use matte products to reduce shine. If you're hiring a professional, they can help you achieve a look that’s both flattering and natural.

Hair should be styled in a way that feels like you. If you typically wear your hair straight or curly, aim for a look that’s true to your everyday style but perhaps a bit more polished. A natural, windblown look can be perfect for an outdoor session, while soft curls or waves can add texture and volume.

8. Bring a Backup Outfit

It’s always a good idea to have a backup outfit just in case something goes wrong. Whether you spill something on your shirt or the weather takes an unexpected turn, having an extra outfit on hand will give you peace of mind. If you’re planning on shooting at multiple locations, bringing a more casual outfit for a second look can add variety to your final gallery.

9. Be Yourself!

At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you both feel authentic and true to yourselves in your engagement photos. Your outfits should reflect your personalities and the style you want to present as a couple. Whether you go for formal, casual, boho, or classic, make sure your outfits feel like you. After all, these photos are a reflection of your love, so they should represent who you are!

Planning the perfect outfits for your engagement session can take a bit of time, but with these tips in mind, you’re sure to look and feel amazing on camera. Your engagement photos will be a beautiful reminder of this exciting time in your lives. Happy styling—and don’t forget to have fun with it!
