Best Engagement Photography Tips

Spring has sprung, the weather is improving and love is in the air which means... Engagement photo season is here! Time to start planning and thinking through all the details that will make your engagement photos stunning. Here are a few tips on how to make your engagement session special and unique to you!

1. Coordinate Outfits

Outfit selection can really make or break your engagement photos. It's important to try and coordinate your outfits so that you the two of you look like you're together. Now, I'm not necessarily talking prom level coordination, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

Color is important. I recommend choosing a neutral or monochromatic color palette an using pops of color in accessories. White, black, and gray is timeless and always looks great, but you can use pops of color with shoes, jewelry, and other accessories to make things pop! Earth and jewel tones also photograph beautifully depending on your location choice.

Dressing to match is also a key piece. If you're wearing a cocktail dress and your fiancé is wearing shorts and a polo, the mismatch will make your photos look a bit awkward. Be sure to coordinate your outfits as a couple so you look like you belong together.

2. Pick a Location or Theme that's Unique to You

Nothing makes engagement photos more personal that choosing a location or theme that means something to the two of you. Not only does that make your photos unique and special, but both of you will feel more invested in the session. In the past I've photographed couples in a tiny home, breweries, favorite date locations, on a sail boat, music venues and even at Disney World. Your engagement photos are a once in a lifetime opportunity to show case your love story before your wedding day. Coming up with something that's personal, exciting, and authentic will make your photos even more special!

3. Add Personal Elements

Personal elements are another way to make your engagement photos personal. I use the term personal elements pretty broadly because I've seen couple use all types of things to incorporate their personalities into their photos. Some couples bring their dogs or even horses which can be so fun. Another way to incorporate a personal touch is to include family heirlooms like jewelry. Your favorite champagne, wine, beers or food can be another fun prop to include!

4. Have a Goal for Using Your Photos

Photos are only as valuable as the use you get out of them. A dusty hard drive full of photos isn't worth very much. It's important to have a game plan for how you plan to use your photos. Most commonly people use their photos for Save the Dates, prints and social media, but there are other ways to get more use out of your photos.

Personally, I think photo books used as guest books on the wedding day, gallery walls, and artwork like framed canvases, metals or acrylic prints are impactful ways to get more use out of your photos. That way not only do you get to enjoy your photos, but your guests, family and friends can as well!

5. Have Fun and be Yourselves

Being in front of a camera can definitely feel awkward and uncomfortable, but the best photos happen when you loosen up and just be yourselves. You can 100% read authenticity in photographs. Have fun with each other, be in love and enjoy the moment. Don't be afraid to embrace, kiss, laugh and be silly. These photos will live on forever in your family and will be a reminder to future generations of the love you two shared.
