Family photos are one of the most meaningful parts of any wedding day. These photos are the ones that end up on mantels, passed down through generations, and cherished for years to come. Without a plan however, family portraits can quickly become one of the most stressful parts of the day. The good news? With a little preparation, your family photo session can be a breeze!
After years of photographing weddings in Cleveland, Ohio, we’ve helped hundreds of couples navigate family portraits with ease. Here are our top 7 tips to help you plan for family wedding photos:
We work with our couples on creating a timely and efficient family photo list during our planning meeting. If your photographer doesn't offer planning services, we recommend you start by creating a list of all the family groupings you’d like photographed. Include any portraits you may want that include or don't include your spouse (Ex: Just you, mom, and dad vs. you, mom, dad, and your spouse). Keep it simple and prioritize the most important combinations. Remember this isn't the time for every possible cousin pairing! We’ll use this list to ensure no one gets missed and the session runs efficiently.
Bonus Tip: Aim to photograph elderly family members and young children first.
Designate a family member or wedding party member who knows both sides of the family to help round people up. This person can work with us as we prepare for the next groupings to ensure everyone is present and ready. This is especially helpful if we’re working on a tight timeline.
We recommend either doing these photos at your ceremony location or choosing a location nearby for family photos. This saves valuable time and helps keep the momentum of the day moving. It's best not to travel for family photos as some people may get lost or show up late and delay the timeline.
It doesn't have to be you, but task someone with letting your family members know in advance where and when family photos will happen. This avoids confusion and delays. Include the plan in your wedding day timeline and on send out a reminder the week of your wedding.
While it’s important to include the key people, we recommend limiting the formal photo list to immediate and essential extended family. Large groupings can be tricky to manage, and we want to make sure your portraits feel relaxed and well-composed. We like to think of it as, "what photos are you the most likely to want to print". You may think you need a photo of every person in both sides of your family, but realistically, it's hardly ever used in albums or prints.Â
The best time for family photos is usually right before the ceremony or immediately after it. This is when everyone is mostly together.Â
We’ve done this many times, and we know how to make it fast, fun, and beautiful. Once we have your photo list and timeline, we’ll guide everyone through the process so you can focus on what matters most, being present with the people you love.
Planning ahead for family photos really makes all the difference in how smoothly your wedding day flows. When you’re relaxed and your family knows what to expect, we’re able to capture genuine smiles, joyful moments, and timeless portraits that you’ll treasure forever.
