5 Tips for Beautiful Engagement Photos

5 Tips for Beautiful Engagement Photos

  1. Hair Ties on Your Wrists

Probably the most common thing I catch before starting photos during both engagement sessions and weddings are hair ties on wrists! Now, there’s nothing wrong with a nice scrunchy as an accessory to match your outfit, but the little black and brown hair ties that you wear in case you need it are usually not very flattering in photos and are extra work to retouch out! Let’s face it, they really don’t accessorize very well with a diamond ring!

  1. Avoid Unflattering Clothing

I always encourage couples to try on their outfits before the date of their engagement session. It’s not uncommon to order new clothes to wear for engagement sessions, but if you wait till the day of to try them on, you might realize they don’t fit the way you want them to.

When you try on your outfits, be sure to see how they look from different angles. You may like how the outfit looks from the front, but from the side it could appear boxy or baggy. Examples of clothing that can sometimes appear unflattering in photos are loose cardigans, baggy sweaters, oversized flannels, and shirts or dresses that are too tight. Your photographer should be able to find poses to make you look as good as possible, but an outfit that flatters your body type will help a lot!

  1. Color Coordinate

I’ve seen this a time or two when it comes to outfit selections. When your outfits don't match, the photos just don’t look quite as nice. Picking outfits that are the same color or complimentary colors will tie your photos together nicely and give them a more balanced look.

  1. Location, Location, Location

Locations can make a huge difference between beautiful and average photos. Usually, your photographer will know of some great locations that you can go to, but if you have a location in mind that you’d like to have your photos taken, think about these questions:

How much variety is at this location?

What will that location look like this time of year?

Is this a busy location or will we have to dodge lots of foot traffic?

How much walking will be involved?

What will the sun be like at the time of our shoot at this location?

If you can answer those questions and feel confident your location will work, you’ll be all set!

  1. New Hairstyles or Makeup Looks

Now this is somewhat subjective and they are of course your photos, so do whatever makes you feel the best, but I have heard from some past clients and friends who have changed things up with their hair or make up for photos and wished they hadn’t. Trying new things can be exciting and fun, but if you’re unsure if you’re going to like it, it might be best to stick with what you’re comfortable with before switching it up for photos you'll have to remember this special time in your life forever.
